My son wants to play snake and ladder with me together. I enjoy the play. On the second round, I play until I am falling asleep half way. Many times he wakes me up and encourages me to nap on bed. During brushing teeth at night, he wants me to let him do by himself. I rebuke him for slouching on the sofa behind my back. Immediately, he points that my husband is slouching. I am surprised for my answer, “Does it mean people eat poo, you also eat poo?” He is speechless. While it is time to talk with his grandma (my mother in law), he presses the loudspeaker again. That irritates my husband and he quickly switches it off.

The meaning of scarecrow makes me question about fierce looking people. My two secondary school teachers and even my art school lecturer in creative writing look fierce. However, they show their gentle eyes to me. I also remember my business mentor’s gentle eyes and expressions to me. The fierce looks of my parents, ex-boss, Japanese actor (whom my mum idolize acting as bad guy) are just a false sight. My dad is right that we can tell from the eyes. How is scarecrow related to fierce people?

In the end, I ask Uncle WY about it, “Uncle WY, what do you understand about scarecrow? Does it symbolize anything good or bad?”

“Hello Yoshiko, a ‘scarecrow’ is just a figure, with man’s clothes or a statue which farmers put in the fields amongst the crops to scare away the birds or crows which come to feed on the crops! Dat is why its called a ‘scarecrow’! But to little children it may mean something ‘evil’ from the stories they have read of the ‘scarecrow’,” he explains simply.

More questions boil within my thoughts, “Oh I see. Does it signify any meaning? Good or bad meaning? What I understand about scarecrow is: Later on, the crows found out it is not a real person so they step on the scarecrow. Its ending is burnt with fire.”

“Hey Yoshiko, in the farmer’s idea, the scarecrow will help the farmer to scare away the crow. But crows are very intelligent n after awhile(maybe a few days) will know its only dummy n may even sit on it in poo on it!! Haaaaaaaaaa haaaaaaaaaaa. unc WY,” he replies patiently.

He ends with, “And then the farmer may burn it in fire n the farmer may come up with other ways to keep the crows away?? unc WY.”

“Oops before i zzz Yoshiko. Sometimes the farmer employ men with rifles to shoooot these pesky crows. unc WY,” he ends it.

Strange to suddenly think of an idea in an opposite way, “Could it be human pretending to be scarecrow to attract them. Then when the crows don’t realize it, the human inside the scarecrow kills them. Is this possible too?”

Wish you all have good days and thank you.

Money

Lack of money is worrying
Tons of money is also worrying
Turn money upside down
Erase middle letter
Depict wouah
WOAH is the simplified version
The worried feeling
Money causes woe
Money causes anxiety

Producing a new currency
Bit Coin attracts predators
Predators like sharks
Smell the new currency
Uses their knowledge to
Hack and steal the money

Money is valuable paper
Money are considered dangerous
Money blinds the eyes
Money is always at fault
The problem lies on the owner
Owner’s focus
Owner’s mindset
Owner’s heart
Owner’s priority sequence

Two choices of path
To earn money
Only one path to decide
Earn money honestly
Or earn dirty money

With my current situation looking for jobs and earn money makes me realize that lack of money is difficult. Then I realised that a wealthy family also have their worries from being robbed. Therefore, this poetry is birthed out.

Midnight Hunger

Restless on bed
Growls
He requests for more
More milk

Scoop the milk powder
Drop it into milk bottle
Close it tightly
Shake! Shake!
Dissolving milk powder with water
Suddenly
Creak!
Bam!

My head stuck out of kitchen door
Nobody is there
Who?
My son?

Carry the milk bottle
Plucking the nipple into his
Hungry mouth
Interrogate who plays door
Nod nod
Confess during
Glug glug
Drinking his milk hungrily
Replying his impatience

Finish drinking milk
Letting go the milk bottle to me
Droopy eyes
Drink water and
Dozes off to dreamland

My toddler requested to have another round of milk because his stomach growled. While I was shaking the milk bottle, suddenly my room door creak and bam. Sticking my head out, nobody was there. Upon entering my room and plucking the milk bottle to him, I gently asked him the one who opened and closed the door. Nodding while drinking his milk, he confessed. Huh? I do wonder the reason for him doing so. Probing it to know he was being impatient. After his milk, he dozed off easily.

Visualizers

I
In the visual artists’ vocabulary
Image is a language in their minds
To produce tangible visual artworks.

II
Visual people remember events through
Pictures, photos, mental snapshots through the eyes
Into the brain’s memory banks.

“Visual language” came to my mind when I want to express the above haiku. Slowly, the right words flowed out as I revised it the second time.

Hungry Eyes At Goldfish vs Donut

Behind the aquarium
A pair of hungry eyes are looking
Looking at the swimming goldfish
Goldfish is fearful of the glowing eyes
The glowing eyes of a cat.
Goldfish is fearful of the saliva
The saliva from the cat’s mouth.

Waits at a box of donuts
Donut in pink to be cut
Cut in half for his
For his reward to finish lunch
To finish lunch quickly.
Waits a a box of donuts
Meowing with drooping saliva.

He reminds me
He looks like
A cat looking at the goldfish
Goldfish in the aquarium.

My son was very happy and claimed the promise to give him donut if he finished his lunch. Indeed, he quickly ate his lunch and sat on the chair to see his donut. The way he looked at the donuts reminded me of a cat looking at the goldfish. Then he meowed.

Sticky Butt & Glue Eyes

Glue at butt
Sticky butt
On the seat.
Like a gecko
Like a lizard
On the wall.

Sitting glued to the seat
Eyes glued to the monitor
Calling him to bath
The word
“Later, later, in a few minutes”
Minutes passed
Hours passed
Still
Sitting glued to the seat
Eyes glued to the monitor
Calling him to bath

Repeating the same process
Before the arrow points
To the end of the flowchart.

My husband enjoys playing computer games. He can play for quite sometime before we have a child. It took him so long to stand up to bath.

As Sticky As

As sticky as a sticker
Sticky body with
Sticky hands
Sticky neck
It is
The leftover of
A dried perspiration.

As sticky as a glue
Sticking his body parts
Sticking his hands
Onto me
Onto his dad
So sticky like a glue
Such a pungent smell
Enough to faint you
With crossed eyes.

The Turtle’s Eyes

The turtle’s eyes is so big
The turtle’s eyes is very big
The turtle’s eyes is extremely big
The turtle is scary
The turtle is scaring me
I am scared of the turtle
I am fearful of the turtle
I am frightened of the turtle.
NO! NO! NO!
I don’t want to see it.

My toddler reported to me his worst event of bring startled and frightened by my turtle. Then I revised it putting myself in his shoes.

A Large Eyes Green Turtle

Once,
An object of cuteness amongst my school
Now,
An object of fear frightens my toddler.

A large eyes green turtle.

I am aghast.
I am speechless.
Why?
Why?

Inspiration On: 24 December 2012 at 10:21pm

During my studies in my art school, I sculpted a cute clay, turtle with Manga type big eyes. In the school, my sculpted turtle received cute appraisals from my lecturers and classmates. Shockingly, my toddler is fearful of it. This rendered me aghast and speechless.
