Oh, the quarrels and commotion. A headache story where my friend confided with me asked me to write poetry based on her family’s situation. So this poetry is dedicated to my friend. This story is based on my friend’s story with a toddler who loves to play power game with everyone in the family to stop from entering house. It is just a power play game. Normally, his parents and grandparents play along. Later on, he let them in. Unexpectedly, the grandma from dad’s side took it to heart and lashed out at the son. Take anything from the floor and threw at him, but thank God the thing is thrown away.

Beat Bad Weather

Sharp scolding
Loud howling
Scolding the rain
Howling the rain
To halt
Because they
Postpone his outing
Disrupt his outing

Kick towards the thunder
Kick towards the lightning
Kick towards the rain
Punch! Punch!
Kick! Kick!
Punch! Punch!
Kick! Kick!
Against
The bad weather.

My son was unhappy because thunder and rain postponed his outing. Though he was impatient, this may teach him about patience. Unexpectedly, his reactions became the source of my inspiration. First paragraph is told from my perspective, but second paragraph is told from his perspective when he commented he kick against the thunder. Definitely, he was unhappy and vented his anger towards the bad weather. All I told him was to wait.

Kick Empty Bucket

PAM!
Kicking the empty bucket
PAM!
BAM! BAM!
It falls over
As it
ROLL! ROLL!
And
ROLL! ROLL!

SCOLDING!
Afraid of grandma’s scolding
Grandma’s first scolding
WAIL!
Wail FeArFuLlY.

On his cot, he confesses
Confesses of his wrongdoings
Wrongdoings to me.
Slowly & gently, I explain
It is wrong
Wrong to kick the bucket
The empty bucket.
Don’t repeat it.
Nod, nod.
Nodding in agreement.
Learning his lesson.

Upon rushing home from the lecture performance, my son played with the recycled bucket in his grandma’s room during my shower. His grandma never scolds him and tends to spoil him with lots of things. The recycled empty bucket is to contain the air-conditioner leakage. Of course, my son was testing his grandma’s patience. Scolding occurs then afraid. Next day onwards, he stops doing it.

Daddy scolds
He scolds me
Because
I am naughty.

Don’t want
Don’t want
I don’t want daddy
Daddy is scary
Daddy is very fierce
Daddy is like a lion
Fierce
Like a lion.

But he is not fierce
When I well behave.
I want daddy.

At night, he would prefer me to pray than his dad because his dad scolded him for being naughty. So he replied, “不要爸爸祷告,爸爸可怕,爸爸很凶,爸爸相狮子。” Then I revise it a bit by inserting head and tail and putting myself in his shoes when his dad is not fierce and he wants his daddy.
